This quick pencil study shows five sketches of a man digging; he is not seen in a single pose, but these sketches seen from behind explore a number of actions that are part of the digging.

This sketch depicts a man in profile, facing toward his right. He wears a turban and an elaborate collar. On the verso is pasted a small print of James Barry's painting "The Distribution of Premiums in the Society of Arts", originally part of a series "The Progress of Human Culture" painted between 1777 and 1784. The print is smaller and more simplified than the official print Barry made after his painting published in 1792, and probably came from a book.

This drawing depicts a serene landscape. A road running alongside a stream appears in the foreground among rocky outcrops, thick vegetation and bushy trees. The vista opens out in the middle ground and includes a lake at the right with a church standing on its shores at the left. A town is visible on the far shore of the lake and low mountains rise in the distance.

This sheet contains studies of fourteen figures in various stages of elaboration. Several of the figures are represented standing while gazing upward, including a man with an outstretched arm on the left edge of the sheet, a woman standing before a column near the center, and a man with a cross over his shoulder in the upper right corner. Two summarily sketched seated figures in the lower left corner appear to develop ideas for a similar figure placed at the foot of a column in a more detailed study near the middle of the sheet. In the upper left quadrant of the sheet appears a monk kneeling beneath a tree with a figure holding a staff standing behind him. Marked off by an octagonal frame along the lower edge is a seated female figure pointing upward with her right hand and holding a globe in her left.

At least eight women crowd onto what appears to be a balcony. Most of the women are at least partially nude, and several wear headdresses and necklaces reminiscent of various types of ancient Eastern costume, including Assyrian and Egyptian. These accessories and several garments are rendered in bright yellow watercolor which constrasts with the blue tones that otherwise dominate the scene. Underneath the women, faint traces of pencil indicate a crowd beneath the balcony.

This sheet contains sketches for two different unidentified scenes. The upper scene depicts a square-jawed, mustachioed man standing in front of a railing or counter. Two figures, suggested only by their contours, lean upon the rail or counter from the other side. Between them appears an unidentified object. The lower scene represents two men standing on a platform. The nearer figure, wearing shorts, bends forward to lift something. Another, larger objects sits in front of him. Behind him stands a figure in a long coat. This second figure seems to address the heads of an audience behind and below the platform.
